The Brenner Road is the original pass road over the Brenner, before the modern motorway took over the main traffic. The convertible tour leads through picturesque valleys, historic places, and offers a relaxed alternative to the faster, but less scenic Brenner motorway.

The Highlights of the Brenner Road

1st Stage: Innsbruck to Matrei am Brenner – A Historical Start in Tyrol

Your convertible tour begins in Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol. Shortly after the start, you have an impressive view of the Europabrücke, the highest bridge in Austria. It belongs to the motorway, but the Brenner Road runs underneath it, providing spectacular perspectives on your convertible road trip.

On your way to Matrei am Brenner, you drive through a traditional region with typical Tyrolean villages, surrounded by majestic mountains.

2nd Stage: Matrei am Brenner to the Brenner Pass – Alpine Crossing with Flair

The convertible journey continues over Steinach am Brenner to the actual Brenner Pass, which connects Austria and Italy. Up here at around 1,370 meters above sea level is the national border – an ideal place for a short break.

Compared to other alpine passes, the Brenner is relatively gently rising, which makes the drive particularly pleasant.

3rd Stage: Brenner Pass to Sterzing – Descent into South Tyrol

After the pass, the descent towards South Tyrol begins. The first larger town is Gossensaß, a small but historically rich place with views of the Zillertal Alps.

Just before Sterzing, it is worth stopping at the Fortress Franzensfeste, an impressive fortress dating back to the 19th century. It offers exciting insights into the history of the region.

4th Stage: Sterzing – Destination in One of the Most Beautiful Alpine Towns

The convertible tour ends in Sterzing, one of the most beautiful small towns in South Tyrol. Here you can stroll through the historic old town with its colorful house facades or relax in one of the cafés.

Tips for Your Convertible Tour

The Brenner Road is an ideal convertible route for a relaxed drive through the Alps. It is well developed and less steep than many other pass roads, making cruising in the convertible particularly enjoyable.

The best travel time is from spring to autumn. In summer, it can get warm in the lower areas, while in higher regions the temperatures remain pleasant.
