Breitach Gorge

Breitach Gorge

Just a few kilometers south of Oberstdorf, you will discover the Breitach Gorge, a true natural highlight – and a perfect stop on your cabrio tour through Bavaria. The gorge is considered the deepest canyon in Central Europe, impressing with dramatic sheer walls, roaring waters, and an almost mystical atmosphere. Nestled in the beautiful Alpine landscape of the Allgäu, it is both a geological and scenic unique sight.

The drive to get there is an experience in itself. The road winds idyllically through the Stillachtal valley, past green meadows, charming farms, and wooded slopes. In the open cabrio, you can feel the fresh mountain air and the slight temperature change – a welcome relief on hot days. With every turn, you get closer to the sound of the Breitach river until you finally reach the parking lot right at the entrance to the gorge.

Experience fascinating nature up close

The Breitach Gorge was shaped by the wild river of the same name, which has carved its way through the hard rock over thousands of years. Today, a secured path runs along the gorge – sometimes on wooden walkways, sometimes over narrow rock plateaus, always close to the water. Here, you can admire the natural spectacle up close: spray rises, the water cascades down into the depths, and sunbeams break through the moist air, making moss and rock glow in rich green.

The circular path through the gorge takes about 1.5 to 2 hours and is mostly well walkable – sturdy footwear is advisable. If you still have energy after visiting the gorge, you can extend your tour by hiking into the nearby Kleinwalsertal or to the Söllereck. The visitor center, which offers fascinating insights into the geology, flora, and fauna of the region, is also worth a visit.

A perfect stopover on your cabrio tour

Whether as a short break or as an extended excursion – the Breitach Gorge is an ideal destination on a summer cabrio tour through Bavaria. The contrast between the airy driving pleasure on the road and the intense nature experience in the gorge makes this place so special. Especially in midsummer, the moist coolness of the gorge provides a refreshing relief that makes the tour even more unforgettable.
