Monastery Amorbach

Monastery Amorbach

In the heart of the Bavarian Odenwald lies the impressive Amorbach Monastery, an architectural and cultural masterpiece that has its roots in the early Middle Ages. Nestled in the idyllic town of Amorbach, the former Benedictine abbey presents a fascinating symbiosis of spiritual past and baroque splendor. For travelers on a convertible tour through the Spessart, a stop at Amorbach Monastery is an inspiring highlight – perfect for combining history, culture, and relaxed driving pleasure.

From the Middle Ages to Baroque Glory

The founding of the monastery dates back to the 8th century when it was missionary shaped by Saint Boniface. The monastery experienced its first great period of flourishing in the High Middle Ages when it developed into a spiritual and economic center of the region. Particularly influential was its affiliation with the Hirsau Reform movement in the 12th century, whose spirit is still visible in the clear structure of the Romanesque double towers. These towers were later cleverly integrated into the baroque new building when the monastery was redesigned in the 18th century under Prince-Bishop Karl Philipp von Greiffenclau.

The abbey church is one of the most significant examples of southern German Rococo. Stucco artist Johann Michael Feichtmayr, painter Matthäus Günther, and sculptor Georg Übelhör created a total work of art that still amazes visitors today. Particularly impressive is the high altar with its intricate sculptures and the imposing Stumm organ – one of the largest baroque organs in Europe with around 5,000 pipes.

Highlights at a Glance

A visit to Amorbach Monastery is much more than just a tour. Besides the magnificent abbey church, the princely library with its historical collections and the Green Hall, which is used for cultural events, impress. Regular guided tours provide deep insights into the history and architectural intricacies of the site. A visit during an organ recital is particularly worthwhile – the acoustics of the Stumm organ unfold in all their fullness.
