The Altmühl Valley is one of the most picturesque landscapes in southern Germany and is perfect for a convertible tour. The region offers spectacular natural backdrops, gentle hills, winding country roads, and romantic river valleys. Historic towns, impressive castles, and a relaxed atmosphere make the convertible journey an unforgettable experience.

The convertible route leads from Kelheim via Eichstätt, Pappenheim, and Dinkelsbühl to Rothenburg ob der Tauber and combines breathtaking convertible stretches with cultural highlights. Perfect for an extended weekend or an extended convertible trip, it unites driving pleasure with history, nature, and cuisine.

Stage 1: From Kelheim to Eichstätt by Convertible

The tour starts in Kelheim, a charming town on the Danube. Before the drive begins, a detour to the Befreiungshalle, which towers high above the town and offers a magnificent view over the Danube Valley, is worth it. Then, it continues to the Danube Gorge, one of the most beautiful natural wonders in Bavaria. Here, you can enjoy the stunning panorama or take a short boat trip to the Weltenburg Abbey, where the world’s oldest monastery beer is brewed.

From Kelheim, the drive continues along the winding convertible route through the picturesque Altmühl Valley toward Riedenburg. This town is known for its three castles, which rise impressively above the valley. A stop at Prunn Castle, perched high on a cliff above the Altmühl, offers spectacular views of the landscape.

The journey continues along gentle country roads beside the Altmühl to Eichstätt, a Baroque gem in the heart of the Altmühl Valley. The town enchants with its historic old town, the impressive Willibaldsburg, and numerous cozy cafés inviting you to take a break.

Stage 2: From Eichstätt via Pappenheim to Dinkelsbühl – Nature and Castle Magic

On this stage, one of the most beautiful convertible routes in Bavaria awaits you. Right after starting, a short detour to the famous Twelve Apostles is recommended, an impressive limestone rock formation that rises out of the Altmühl Valley landscape.

Next, you’ll head to Pappenheim, an idyllic town known for its impressive Pappenheim Castle. The castle complex not only offers history to touch but also grand views over the valley.

The next stop is Treuchtlingen, a spa town with relaxing thermal baths – perfect for a little break. Then, it continues through the beautiful Altmühl Valley towards Dinkelsbühl. This town is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Germany and delights with its imposing city wall, winding streets, and picturesque half-timbered houses. An evening stroll through the old town is an absolute must here.

Stage 3: From Dinkelsbühl to Rothenburg ob der Tauber by Convertible

The final stage leads through the gentle hills of Franconia – a perfect convertible route with lots of driving fun. The first stop is worth it in Feuchtwangen, a charming town with a historic marketplace and cozy inns.

From there, continue on the famous Romantic Road, known for its idyllic route. Here, you can open the roof of your convertible and enjoy the landscape as you approach the final stop: Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

This town is the crowning finale of the convertible tour. With its picturesque half-timbered houses, historical city wall, and grand views into the Tauber Valley, Rothenburg offers a unique atmosphere. A walk along the city wall or a visit to the famous Plönlein, one of the most photographed spots in Germany, is especially recommended.
