Imagine driving with the top down along the Rhine, feeling the wind in your hair, enjoying the scent of blooming vineyards, and discovering majestic castles, charming towns, and legendary places. Welcome to the Route of Rhine Romance, one of the most beautiful and historically significant routes in Germany.

This 180-kilometer route connects Mainz with Cologne and leads through the spectacular Middle Rhine Valley, which has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you can expect dreamy landscapes, impressive sights, and culinary highlights. With a convertible, this journey becomes a truly special experience where you can experience the Rhine romance up close.

With the convertible along the great river - Stage by stage

1st Stage: From Mainz to Rüdesheim – The Start of Your Adventure

Your convertible journey along the Route of Rhine Romance begins in Mainz, the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate. Mainz unites modernity and history in an impressive way. A must-visit is the Mainz Cathedral, which breathes over 1,000 years of history. Park your convertible and stroll through the old town—with its half-timbered houses, small boutiques, and cozy wine taverns.

From Mainz, the Route of Rhine Romance takes you to Wiesbaden, the elegant spa town known for its thermal springs and magnificent buildings. A walk through the spa park or a visit to the Kurhaus with its impressive columned front is certainly worthwhile.

The next stop on the Route of Rhine Romance is Eltville am Rhein, known for its roses and excellent wine. The romantic Eltville Castle provides a picturesque backdrop and is the ideal location for a first glass of Rheingau Riesling, at least for the convertible passenger.

The first stage concludes in Rüdesheim am Rhein, which attracts visitors with the famous Drosselgasse. This narrow street filled with half-timbered houses, wine taverns, and restaurants is the perfect spot to end the day with regional specialties.

2nd Stage: From Rüdesheim to Koblenz – The Heart of Rhine Romance

The next morning, the convertible route of Rhine Romance takes you from Rüdesheim to Bingen am Rhein, where the legendary Klopp Castle and the Mouse Tower await you by the riverside. Here begins the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, considered one of the most beautiful river landscapes in the world.

Next, you'll head to Bacharach, one of the most charming towns along the route. Stahleck Castle, which now serves as a youth hostel, overlooks the town and offers spectacular views.

Another highlight is the famous Loreley Rock near Sankt Goarshausen. This legendary rock is the perfect place to take a break and enjoy the view of the Rhine and the surrounding vineyards.

In the afternoon, you’ll reach Koblenz, one of the oldest cities in Germany. Here awaits you the Deutsches Eck, where the Moselle flows into the Rhine. With the cable car, you can ascend to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress and enjoy one of the best panoramic views of the region.

3rd Stage: From Koblenz to Königswinter – Experience Nature and History

After an extensive breakfast in Koblenz, you continue your convertible journey towards Andernach. The city is known for its cold water geyser, which erupts up to 60 meters high—a stunning natural spectacle!

The next stop on the Route of Rhine Romance is Remagen, where you can visit the Apollinaris Church. This neo-Gothic church is a real insider tip for architecture and history fans.

In the afternoon, you will arrive in Königswinter, which features the legendary Drachenfels. The view from this mountain is breathtaking and offers you a view of the Rhine that is hard to beat. It is also worthwhile to visit Drachenburg Castle, which looks like a fairy tale castle.

4th Stage: From Königswinter to Cologne – The Crowning Finale

The final stage of your convertible journey along the Route of Rhine Romance takes you to Bonn, the former capital of Germany. Here, you should visit the Beethoven House, where the famous composer was born. The Bonn Minster is also worth a visit.

Next, you will proceed to Cologne, where your convertible tour finds a sensational conclusion. The city’s landmark, the Cologne Cathedral, is one of the most impressive buildings in Europe. Stroll through the old town, enjoy a freshly tapped Kölsch in a traditional brewery, and let your convertible tour along the Route of Rhine Romance conclude with a walk along the Rhine riverbank.

Tips for Your Convertible Road Trip on the Route of Rhine Romance
