The German Limes Route is more than just a historical road – it is an impressive testament to Roman history in Germany. Over a distance of around 820 kilometers, it connects significant Roman towns from Xanten on the Lower Rhine to Regensburg on the Danube.

For all those traveling in convertible or roadster, it offers an ideal mix of driving pleasure, culture, and diverse nature. This convertible tour takes you through tranquil low mountain regions, charming valleys, and historic towns, allowing you to get close to Roman traces.

Whether as a multi-day convertible trip or a segmented road trip – the route is well-developed, well-signposted, and ideal for relaxed discoveries. The German Limes Route is not only a must for history fans, but also for everyone who loves authentic landscapes and small surprises along the way.

Route Guidance: From Xanten to Regensburg - in Three Stages

The Limes Route can be divided into three distinctive sections, each showcasing its own scenic and cultural characteristics. The stages follow a geographical logic and connect several of the most popular towns along the route.

First Stage: From the Lower Rhine to the Middle Rhine – Xanten to Neuwied

The start of your convertible journey is in Xanten, one of the most significant Roman towns in Germany, featuring the expansive Archaeological Park and Roman amphitheater. From there, you continue through Alpen and Wesel towards Remagen, which attracts visitors with its famous bridge and Roman past. In Rheinbrohl, you will find the official beginning of the Upper German-Rhaetian Limes, with a meticulously reconstructed Limes gate and interesting information boards.

Before reaching Neuwied, the route passes through Bad Hönningen, a popular spot on the Rhine with impressive Roman history and breathtaking views of the Rhine Valley. Neuwied itself offers a lovely old town worth exploring and is a good starting point for further explorations of the region.

This stage impresses with diverse landscapes and a pleasant mix of river and low mountain roads, ideal for a relaxed convertible route with plenty of opportunities to stop and discover.

Second Stage: Through Hesse and the Taunus – Bad Homburg to Walldürn

The second stage begins in Bad Homburg, where the Saalburg with its fully reconstructed Roman fort is a true highlight. The road continues to Taunusstein, a charming town with lovely surroundings, before reaching Idstein, known for its well-preserved half-timbered architecture and Roman relics nearby.

The path then leads you through Glashütten and Butzbach, two smaller towns that offer tranquility and nature, before you reach Pohlheim and Hungen – here you can find many Roman traces, often only accessible through small museums or local tours. Florstadt also offers beautiful recreational areas before the route ends in Walldürn. Walldürn delights with its historic townscape and its own Roman museum.

This stage is characterized by gently rolling landscapes, diverse nature sections, and cultural highlights that can be excellently explored on a convertible journey.

Third Stage: Swabian Jura and Danube Valley – Schwäbisch Gmünd to Regensburg

The third and longest stage starts in Schwäbisch Gmünd, where you will find not only Roman excavations but also a beautiful old town. The journey continues to Aalen, which with its Limes Museum and many archaeological finds becomes a must-stop for every Roman enthusiast.

In Buchen, you have the opportunity to discover further remnants of the Limes before proceeding via Osterburken with its imposing Roman fort. Schwäbisch Gmünd and Aalen are also known for their charming landscape in the Swabian Jura – a perfect backdrop for convertible driving with plenty of curves and panoramic views.

From Schwäbisch Gmünd, the route then continues via Aalen and Buchen to Passau and finally Regensburg, which fascinates with its well-preserved old town, the Stone Bridge, and the Roman fort Castra Regina. Regensburg is a worthy conclusion, perfectly combining history and vibrant urban atmosphere.

This stage is ideal for anyone who loves the interplay of nature, history, and urban flair – a varied convertible route that guarantees impressive impressions.
