Smoo Cave
Smoo Cave, near the small coastal village of Durness in the far northwest of Scotland, is one of the most spectacular natural attractions along the North Coast 500 – and an unforgettable stop on any road trip in Scotland. The cave impresses with its unusual shape, the combination of sea and freshwater cave, as well as its dramatic location right on the steep cliffs of the north coast.
The drive to Smoo Cave is already an experience in itself. On the winding stretch of the NC500, past deep lakes, grassy hills, and deserted moorlands, the view of Durness Bay opens up after a long curve – a magnificent moment, especially with the roof down. The rough wind, the scent of sea and heather, and the play of light of the Scottish clouds enhance the feeling of complete freedom that convertible drivers cherish on this route.
Impressive dimensions and a mysterious atmosphere
Smoo Cave itself is easily accessible via a short path down to the coast. Even at the entrance, it becomes clear why the cave is so special: The main chamber has a massive span of about 40 meters and was shaped by the sea. Behind it lies a second chamber that is streamed by a waterfall – fed by the River Allt Smoo, which flows underground here.
A small wooden deck and a lit walkway provide insights into the fascinating depth of the cave. During guided tours, you can even board a small boat and venture further into the darkness – an adventure for all the senses.
Calm, expanse, and wild beauty
The area around Durness and Smoo Cave offers one of the most impressive landscapes in northern Scotland. Wide sandy beaches like Balnakeil Bay and the view over Loch Eriboll make the region a true hidden gem for nature lovers. The roads are narrow, winding, and largely quiet – ideal for a relaxed and scenically breathtaking convertible tour in Scotland.
Durness itself has a rugged charm with small cafés, a unique chocolate shop, and perhaps the most remote golf course in the country. The contrast between the primordial terrain and the deep tranquility of the landscape creates an almost meditative atmosphere.
A very special stop on the NC500
Anyone traveling the North Coast 500 in a convertible should not miss Smoo Cave. Here, dramatic geology, Scottish legends, and magnificent natural scenery come together – making the place an unforgettable highlight of any tour through the Highlands.
