Here, one already feels the power of the Norwegian landscape – with steep rock walls, deep water, and narrow streets. From here, the road winds uphill in tight hairpin bends towards Stegastein, one of the most impressive viewpoints in Norway.

At 650 meters above sea level, a futuristic viewing platform spectacularly juts out over the fjord – offering an unobstructed view of the sparkling water, surrounded by steep cliffs and snow-capped peaks. Stage 2: From Stegastein over Flotane to Vedahaugane

In Flotane, the route reaches one of its highest points – where snow, wind, and sky dominate. At Vedahaugane, a small rest stop invites a break, with views over the vast plateau. Stage 3: From Sluppen to Lærdalsøyri

Gradually, the descent into the valley begins. The vegetation becomes greener again, and the temperatures milder. Over Sluppen, the road meanders gently downward – past grassy slopes, small waterfalls, and traditional cabins. The landscape appears friendlier and calmer here, yet the charm remains: the view of the Lærdal valley reveals itself repeatedly between the bends.

Upon arrival in Lærdalsøyri, a picturesque conclusion awaits. The historical trading village is famous for its well-preserved wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries – a charming ensemble that resembles an open-air museum. Small cafés, old lanes, and the soothing sound of the Lærdalselva harmoniously complete the tour.

The route is only passable in the summer months – usually from early June to late September. Before your trip, check the current road conditions, as even in summer short-term closures are possible. Due to the altitude, it can still be cool and windy in July – so a warm jacket should be packed.

The entire route can be completed in half a day – but it is more enjoyable to take your time. Especially in good weather conditions, it’s worth taking several photo breaks or taking short walks off the road.

Be mindful of free-ranging sheep and other animals that often stand unexpectedly on the road while driving. And very importantly: Bring enough battery and storage card for your camera – the photo opportunities are breathtaking and numerous.
