Cathedral of Palma

Cathedral of Palma

The Cathedral of Palma, also known as „La Seu“, is one of the most impressive buildings in Mallorca and a remarkable example of Gothic architecture in the Mediterranean. Located right on the coast of the Mallorcan capital, it rises majestically with its characteristic towers and pointed arches above the Parc de la Mar and is visible from almost every point in the old town. Its construction spanned several centuries – it began in the 13th century, but it was not finally completed until the 20th century.

The cathedral impresses not only with its massive size – the nave is among the tallest Gothic naves in the world – but also with the unique light atmosphere inside. Especially in sunshine, colorful light mosaics flood the space, creating an almost magical ambiance.

Architectural Masterpiece with a Modern Touch

A special highlight is the large rose window on the east side of the cathedral, which consists of over 1,200 glass pieces. On certain days in February and November, the incoming sunlight creates a fascinating light display, where the light image of the large window is precisely reflected below on the opposite wall.

The renowned Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí also left his mark during the restoration of the cathedral at the beginning of the 20th century. Among other things, he designed the pulpit and altered the choir stalls, bringing together Gothic severity and Modernisme elements in an exciting way.

Mediterranean Atmosphere in a Historical Setting

The location of the cathedral in close proximity to the coast makes it a perfect starting point for a walk through the historic center of Palma. The narrow streets of the old town, the adjacent Royal Palace of Almudaina, and numerous cafés and boutiques provide a Mediterranean flair. A drive in a convertible along the promenade is also an ideal opportunity to experience the impressive cathedral from different perspectives – especially as part of a relaxing convertible tour around the island’s capital.

An Impression That Lasts

The Cathedral of Palma is much more than just a religious building – it is a symbol of the history, culture, and spirit of Mallorca. Whether you are interested in art history, appreciate spiritual places, or simply want to experience the unique atmosphere of this building – a visit is worthwhile on any trip to the Balearic island.
