The Koggenroute is one of the most charming convertible tours in the Netherlands. It takes you through the West Frisian countryside in North Holland – a region full of polder landscapes, historic towns, and centuries-old dikes. The route is named after the historical area of "Stede Broec, Enkhuizen, Hoorn" – once part of the powerful West Frisian Koggenland. Today, the route is a paradise for everyone traveling in a convertible: quiet, scenic, and rich in cultural discoveries.

Spanning approximately 130 kilometers, the Koggenroute connects some of the most beautiful places in the region, including magnificent port towns, ancient trading centers, and idyllic villages. The roads are narrow but well-maintained, leading past canals, windmills, and orchards – ideal for a leisurely drive with the top down.

Three stages full of history, canals, and enjoyment

The Koggenroute can be conveniently divided into three stages. Each offers its own highlights and invites exploration and pause. Whether you plan a day trip or make several stops with overnight stays – you will be rewarded with West Frisian charm at every stage.

First stage: Enkhuizen – Hoorn – Andijk

The starting point of the route is Enkhuizen – a former VOC port with a rich maritime heritage. The old town, with its canals, warehouses, and the Zuiderzee Museum, is a true experience. Park your convertible at the harbor and take your time for a walk through the cobblestone streets. Then continue along quiet country roads toward Hoorn – one of the most important trading places in Dutch history. The historic town center, the harbor with old sailing ships, and the Westfries Museum tell the story of the golden age of seafaring.

You will ride along the riverside road to Andijk, a quiet place right by the IJsselmeer. The road along the dike offers wide views of water and meadows – perfect for relaxed cruising with the top down. Here you can also find lovely spots for a picnic break with views of the sea.

Second stage: Medemblik – Wognum – Ursem

From Andijk, the route takes you to Medemblik – one of the oldest towns in West Friesland. The old town with its Radboud castle complex, the harbor, and small shops feels almost like an open-air museum. Particularly beautiful is the historic train station with the museum railway to Hoorn – a short detour is worth it even without a locomotive.

The route continues through orchards and polders to Wognum. The village is known for its apple and pear orchards that create a sea of blossoms in spring. The roads around Wognum are quiet and lined with old farmhouses – a perfect section for relaxed driving.

Via small country roads, you reach Ursem, a typical West Frisian village with an active windmill scene. The traditional architecture, proximity to water, and rural tranquility make Ursem a charming stop. Here you can feel the closeness to nature particularly strongly – ideal for a coffee break with views of the fields.

Third stage: Purmerend – De Rijp – back to Enkhuizen

The final stage begins in Purmerend, which is now considered a suburb of Amsterdam but maintains its own history as a livestock market and trading town. The town center, with its canals and Koemarkt, invites you to stroll – or simply to enjoy the urban atmosphere between historic buildings.

Next comes one of the scenic highlights: De Rijp. This picturesque village was once a thriving whaling and trading town; today it is a storybook place with wooden houses, bridges, and canals. The narrow streets and the quiet pace invite a longer stop. In summer, De Rijp is particularly lively – with cafés, small shops, and plenty of water all around.

From there, you return relaxed to Enkhuizen. The road takes you through the typical landscapes of North Holland: flat expanses, many water ditches, grazing cows, and always a bit of wind in your face. To conclude, you can round off the route with a walk along the IJsselmeer or a visit to the open-air museum.

Tips for your convertible tour through Koggenland

The Koggenroute is especially ideal in spring and summer – when the landscape is in bloom and the small villages come to life. Even though the weather is usually mild, a jacket for the convertible ride is advisable, as the wind from the IJsselmeer can be fresh.

Refuel regularly, as the route has many rural sections. It is also worthwhile to plan stops at windmills, farm shops, or small farm cafés – you often find local products, handmade specialties, and the best views there.

Conclusion: Relaxed through West Friesland – the Koggenroute as a convertible route

The Koggenroute is perfectly suited for a calm, scenically impressive convertible tour. Between Enkhuizen, Hoorn, and De Rijp, you will discover the historical heart of North Holland – with an abundance of water, wind, and culture. The roads are relaxed, the places charming, and the mix of nature, history, and West Frisian hospitality make this route a highlight for everyone traveling in a convertible and looking for something special.
